"Imitation of Life" stars Lana Turner and has an appearance by Gospel legend Mahalia Jackson.

One of the central storylines in the film is that of the character Sarah Jane, who is mixed race (black and white) but is deceitfully passing for white.

Things get so bad for Sarah Jane in trying to pass for white, she is beaten up by her white boyfriend who discovers she is half black.

Sarah Jane, suffering from self-hate, distanced herself from her black mother, as she felt she would be privileged passing for white. The end of the film is quite poignant.

"Imitation of Life" is very engaging. The story is a very interesting and timeless one.
